Trump Announces Meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Next Week
Donald Trump announced he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week. Modi’s visit includes the Quad Leaders’ Summit and the UN General Assembly, marking a significant diplomatic engagement.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will be meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week.
In his first public appearance following an apparent assassination attempt on Sunday, Trump praised Modi as “fantastic” but also criticized India, labeling it a “very big abuser” of trade policies with the U.S.
“India, which is a very big abuser — he happens to be coming to meet me next week. Modi, he’s fantastic. I mean, fantastic, man,” Trump said during a town hall event in Flint, Michigan. “Many of these leaders are fantastic ... They’re at the top of their game, but they use it against us. India is very tough.”
Trump did not provide additional details about the upcoming meeting. The Indian Embassy in Washington has yet to respond to a request for comment from CNBC.
During his presidency, Trump visited India in 2020 and expressed a commitment to enhancing trade relations between the two countries. Currently, the U.S. is India’s second-largest trading partner, following China.
Modi is expected to visit the U.S. from September 21 to 23. During his visit, he will participate in the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by President Joe Biden, and speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This will mark Modi’s first visit to the U.S. since securing a historic third term in office in June.
In June 2023, during Modi’s state visit to Washington, the U.S. and India signed several technology and defense agreements, signaling a new phase in their bilateral relations. Since then, collaboration between the two nations has intensified. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of State announced a partnership with the India Semiconductor Mission and India’s electronics and IT government body to enhance the global semiconductor supply chain.
“The United States and India are vital partners in advancing the global semiconductor supply chain amidst ongoing digital transformation. This collaboration highlights the potential to expand India’s semiconductor industry for the benefit of both nations,” the announcement stated.
