Major Mukund was widely recognized for his unique contribution in several counter-terrorism operations. On 25 April 2014, he led an operation in Shopian, Kashmir, in which three terrorists were hiding in a residential area. Knowing the danger, he campaigned bravely with his team. He killed three terrorists without caring for his own life, though he sustained serious injuries in the process and was martyred the same day. For this extraordinary bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime military award.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa wrote to his wife, saying, "This is a very sad time in your life. You have lost a beloved husband, your daughter has lost her beloved father, and her parents Apne Chete Bete Ko Diya Hai. Yet it is a matter of pride that he made the supreme sacrifice while protecting his motherland."
