The Architect of Economic Reforms (1991)

Manmohan Singh is often referred to as the architect of India's economic liberalization. As the Finance Minister of India under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao (1991–1996), he played a pivotal role in transforming India’s economy.
Key initiatives included:

  1. Deregulation of industries to encourage private sector growth.
  2. Liberalization of trade policies to integrate India into the global economy.
  3. Devaluation of the Indian Rupee, boosting exports.
  4. Opening up sectors like banking, telecom, and aviation to foreign investment.

These reforms lifted India out of a financial crisis and laid the foundation for decades of robust economic growth.

Prime Minister (2004–2014)

Dr. Singh became Prime Minister in 2004, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. During his tenure:

  • Economic Growth: India experienced high GDP growth, becoming one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
  • Landmark Policies:
    • Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA): Aimed at rural job creation.
    • Right to Information (RTI) Act: Empowered citizens with government transparency.
    • Nuclear Deal with the US (2008): Strengthened India's global strategic partnerships.

However, his tenure also faced criticism for corruption scandals within the UPA government, including the 2G Spectrum and Coal Allocation controversies.

Former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh has died at the age of 92.
