One Nation One Election: Modi cabinet approves, one nation one election bill will be presented in the winter session
One Nation One Election: One Nation-One Election has been approved by the Modi Cabinet. On Wednesday, 18 September, the Union Cabinet approved the report presented on this. Modi government minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this bill will be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.
The committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind presented its report to the Cabinet in March before the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Presenting this report was also included in the 100-day plan of the Modi government.
Simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections
The Kovind Committee report has recommended holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously across the country. Along with this, it has also been advised to hold municipal corporation and panchayat elections within 100 days of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Support of 32 parties
The committee headed by former President Ramnath Kovind had sought opinion from 62 political parties. Out of these, 32 parties supported One Nation-One Election, 15 opposed it and 15 did not respond. Those who supported it include parties like BJP, JDU, LJP (R). At the same time, 15 parties including Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have opposed it. Amit Shah's announcement
Home Minister Amit Shah had said on September 17 that the BJP-led NDA government will implement One Nation-One Election in its current term. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had also supported it on Independence Day.
Support of PM Modi and NDA
PM Modi had said that frequent elections hinder the progress of the country. The country should move towards 'one nation, one election'. BJP has also given it a place in its election manifesto and many NDA parties are also in support of it.
Opposition to the opposition
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge opposed the decision, saying it is impractical and is diverting attention from the current issues of the country.
