Mamata Banerjee Expresses Shock Over MBBS Student Gangrape, Urges Female Students to Protect Themselves, Vows Strict Action
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the gangrape of a 23-year-old second-year MBBS student near a private medical college in Durgapur. The incident happened late at night when the student was returning from dinner with a friend.
Mamata questioned how the student could have been out so late, around 12:30 am, in a forested area close to the campus. She emphasized that girls must protect themselves and criticized private medical colleges for not ensuring the safety of their students, especially female students at night.

Mamata assured strict action against the guilty, stating that the police have already arrested three suspects and are searching for others involved. She also highlighted that similar incidents have occurred in other states like Manipur, UP, Bihar, and Odisha, and called for stringent action there as well.
In her state, she said, the accused were charge-sheeted quickly, and the lower court even ordered the death penalty for the perpetrators. Mamata urged not to treat such crimes casually and promised justice and punishment for the offenders.
