Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion, gave it his all but fell short of claiming his second consecutive Olympic gold medal. Despite this, he made history by becoming the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win two successive Olympic medals.
In an interview , Neeraj praised Arshad's exceptional throw, saying, "He produced an excellent throw. In sports, sometimes it's your day, sometimes it's someone else's. Maybe god's blessings were more with Arshad today. I tried my best and I am happy with the distance I managed to throw."
Neeraj's silver-winning throw was his season's best effort, surpassing his qualification throw of 89.34m. However, it was not enough to match Arshad's incredible throw, which set a new Olympic record.
The Indian athlete also expressed his gratitude for the immense crowd support in Paris, which he felt helped bring out the best in him. "I personally love crowds a lot. In Tokyo, the stadiums were empty but here, there were a lot of people. I enjoy crowd pressure and feel it gets the best out of me," he said.
With this silver medal, Neeraj joins an elite group of Indian athletes who have won back-to-back Olympic medals, including wrestler Sushil Kumar and shuttler PV Sindhu.
The men's javelin throw event saw a highly competitive field, with seven athletes throwing beyond the 86m mark. Grenada's Anderson Peters secured the bronze medal with a throw of 88.54m, while Czech Republic's Yakub Vadlejch finished fourth with a throw of 88.50m.
Arshad Nadeem's record-breaking throw was a highlight of the event, stunning the crowd and cementing his position as a top contender in the sport. As for Neeraj Chopra, he will return home with a silver medal and a renewed determination to work towards his next goal.
