In 1957, Mulchand Dubey of the Indian National Congress secured victory on this prestigious seat. He won again in 1962, but after his demise, a by-election was held in 1962, which was won by Ram Manohar Lohia of the Samyukta Socialist Party. Congress leaders held this Lok Sabha seat in 1967 and 1971.
In 1977, amidst the wave against Congress, Dayaram Shakya of the Bharatiya Lok Dal emerged victorious. Dayaram Shah of the Janata Party won in 1980. Khursheed Alam Khan of the Indian National Congress won in 1984, but in 1989, Santosh Bharatiya of the Janata Dal snatched the seat. Salman Khurshid of the Congress reclaimed it in 1991.
Amidst the Ram Mandir wave, Swami Sachchidanand Hari Sakshi Maharaj of the BJP won consecutively in 1996 and 1998. Chandrabhushan Singh of the Samajwadi Party secured victory in 2004, followed by Salman Khurshid's second win for Congress in 2009.
